Challenge

UL Solutions, a global safety science company, needed to introduce its brand to a new generation. Targeting tweens, the brief mandated that we explain UL safety science in the context of wind energy. They asked that the video give a brief overview of the history and science of wind energy, plus a real-life example of empowered youth. Finally, they wanted us to create a project that kids could do in class.

Solution

Through research, we discovered a real-life case study of students and their teacher who helped their community through wind energy, and brought it to life with motion graphic animation. We consulted with elementary and middle-school teachers to advise us on the tone of our script.

To film elements of wind energy history, we built a 3-D set and created 2-D art to use for stop-motion animation. We went on location to the UL Solutions headquarters to interview engineers and film their laboratories. For the class project, we engaged an engineer to build a small wind-powered boat made of recycled materials that was simple enough for middle-school children to build together in class.

Results

Our video was shown in schools across the country and released on Disney's "Bill Nye the Science Guy" renewable energy DVD series.
